Health Equity Curriculum

Health Equity

CHESA and our collaborators from multiple disciplines and institutions are creating a new Health Equity Curriculum for Anesthesia and Surgery trainees. This curriculum is a work in progress. We are converting the content into blended learning formats, including live lectures, small group case-based discussion, and online modules that can be used by trainees asynchronously. We are also actively gathering input from multiple stakeholders and initiatives.

Quality improvement

The UCSF Anesthesia Division of Global Health Equity (ADGHE) conducted a quality improvement project to enhance the patient consent process and improve access to information, especially for non-English speaking patients. The perioperative period is stressful for all patients, during which they are expected to absorb complex information. This can be especially daunting for non-English speaking patients, who comprise a significant proportion of operative patients at ZSFG. With the support of a SURF grant, Drs. Laura Lang and Michael Lipnick designed a series of animated videos in multiple languages for patients requiring any form of anesthesia care at ZSFG.

Five videos have been created (general, neuraxial, regional and obstetric anesthesia, and monitored anesthesia care) in three languages (English, Spanish, and Cantonese). These videos are intended to augment the informed consent process and enhance patient understanding of the anesthesia care plan. In addition to the existing oral and written consent process, patients will view these videos in the pre-op clinic and pre-op holding area.

Surgical site infection

In this CHESA Grand Rounds we host the Lifebox team to discuss the development, implementation, and scale of Clean Cut across surgical subspecialties and geographies. Reducing surgical site infections is one of Lifebox’s three core pillars of Safer Surgery. Clean Cut – based on the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist – is a three to six month program that works to strengthen a hospital’s perioperative infection prevention practices and save lives. CHESA Director Dr. Doruk Ozgediz hosted this Grand Rounds along with UCSF MS4 Ruth Laverde.

Over the past nine years Dr. Phyllis Kisa MBCHB, MMed, from Makerere University and Dr. Doruk Ozgediz, MD, MSc and Director of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Center of Health Equity in Surgery and Anesthesia (CHESA) have gained invaluable perspectives and lessons learned through their partnerships and collaborative efforts in global surgery. For the inaugural IGHS-CHESA Grand Rounds on June 24, 2021, they provided their unique insights as pediatric surgeons, and in the context of their respective home countries of Uganda and the United States. Both physicians conveyed the importance of sustainability and investment in long-term partnerships with other clinicians and stakeholders in an effort to confront the surgical burden of disease.
